Dr. Teresa M. Beck
Dr. Teresa M. Beck is associate professor and director of therapeutic recreation and health professions programs at Grand Valley State University, and has been a member of the GVSU faculty since 1995. Prior to this, she spent time as an instructor at Baylor University, the University of North Texas, and Virginia Wesleyan College, in addition to several years in clinical work.
Dr. Beck's students commend her engaging teaching style which focuses on active learning, as well as her sense of humor, personable approach, and broad knowledge of subject matter. They have stated that her passion for the profession and use of personal experiences prepared them well for their futures. Without exception, her students praise her for her accessibility and concern for their ongoing personal and professional development.
Beck earned a bachelors degree in recreation from Indiana University, a master's degree in recreation and leisure from Florida State University, and a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of North Texas.
She is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and an active member of numerous professional organizations, from which she has earned many accolades. In 2006, she received the Meritorious Service Award from the National Therapeutic Recreation Society, and the Excellence in Education Award from the American Therapeutic Recreation Association. In 2003, the Therapeutic Recreation Section of Michigan's Recreation and Park Association recognized her with their Outstanding Achievement Award.
Beck currently resides in Grand Rapids, MI.
