As alumni, we know the minute new students arrive on campus they become Lakers for a Lifetime. Join us in Allendale as we welcome our newest Lakers, and their families, to their home-away-from home by offering a helping hand as they join the Grand Valley community.

You’ll receive a t-shirt at check-in and breakfast, drinks, and snacks will be provided.

Monday, August 19 Move-In is for affinity groups arriving early for their specific orientations. Tuesday, August 20 is general first-year Move-In.

DAILY SCHEDULE: 
8:30-9:00 a.m. Registration and breakfast (Alumni House)
9:00 a.m. Welcome (Alumni House)
9:15 a.m. Head to Living Centers
9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Volunteer Shift (Various Living Centers)

This event will go on rain or shine as our new students will arrive regardless of the weather.

Move-In is for adults and requires physical activity. A limited number of light duty jobs, such as greeting families and labeling boxes, are available.

Volunteer Shift

This year, there are two opportunities to assist with Move-In:

Affinity Orientation Move-In - Monday, August 19
Around 400 students participating in GVSU's affinity orientation programs move in on Monday, August 19. These optional orientations are for students who identify as Asian, Black/African American, Latino/a/x and/or Hispanic, and Native American.

General Move-In - Tuesday, August 20
More than 1,000 students will arrive on campus on Tuesday, August 20.

Volunteer Shift *

Limited light duty positions are available for those who are interested in volunteering but are not physically able to lift/move large items. Please note that for light duty positions, walking and/or standing for an extended period of time may still be necessary.

Volunteer Disclosure and Consent

Thank you for volunteering your time and talent to Grand Valley State University in support of its important mission of educating and shaping the lives of our students.

A University volunteer is an individual who performs work or provides services in support of University activities without the expectation of compensation. Volunteers may perform a variety of services, however the University does not intend for volunteers to perform or displace work that is presently being performed by University employees.

Volunteers acting on behalf of the University are expected to adhere to all University Policies.

Volunteers are not considered employees and are not covered by workers' compensation disability benefits. Therefore volunteers are personally responsible for the expense of any medical care received for injuries incurred because of volunteer service to the University. Volunteers are not eligible for unemployment benefits.

If your assignment involves minor children, confidential information, or money you will be required to pass a criminal background check before your assignment begins. If your assignment requires you to operate a vehicle owned or leased by the University, you will need to present your valid driver's license to the Department of Public Safety for an MVR-review and institutional driving authorization.

Disclosure of Risks

The University endeavors to provide a safe environment for volunteers, adhering to the same standards it has for its employees. However, any activity may include dangers and risks to which you may be exposed as a volunteer.

I know that as a Volunteer, I am personally responsible for the expense of any medical care related to injuries or illnesses that I incur while volunteering at the University.

I, therefore, freely and voluntarily agree to assume and take on myself all of the risks and responsibilities in any way associated with this activity. I release Grand Valley State University, its Board of Trustees, employees, and agents from all liability, claims, and actions that may arise from injury or harm to me, from my death, or from damage to my property in connection with this activity. I understand that this Release covers liability, claims, and actions caused entirely or in part by any acts or failures to act of Grand Valley State University, or any of its employees or agents, including but not limited to negligence, mistake, or failure to supervise. I understand that this Release does not apply to instances of intentional misconduct by a University employee or agent.

These releases are effective for me, my personal representative, assigns, and heirs.
