“I have photographed not so much the obvious, but the less noticed
and often overlooked scenes.” – David Lubbers
David Lubbers is a Grand Rapids, Michigan-based photographer. After getting his master’s degree from Michigan State University in 1973, Lubbers traveled and photographed worldwide. He photographed places such as Mexico, Italy, the Netherlands, and around the Southwest United States but always returned to take photos in his home state of Michigan. The state’s landscape, with its rivers, lakes, forests, swamps, and shorelines, provided him with a variety of geographic features where he could consider light and shadow in different environments, both elements he is keen on capturing in his images.
His work also includes developing themes of time, reflection, and connection. Wherever he is, Lubber’s goal is to photograph the then and now, capturing a moment in time that may never be captured the same way again. He not only captures landscapes, cities, and spaces but also the hearts of the people who have lived there.
