Art is Everywhere at GVSU

The GVSU Art Gallery collects, manages, exhibits, and interprets the University's art collection to foster experience learning and art engagement within the GVSU community. Interaction with art can inform social discourse, encourage civic dialogue, foster creative and critical thought, and provide avenues for personal reflection. It is for these reasons that art is everyone at GVSU.

The Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall (RFH) is located at 500 Lafayette, in the Belknap neighborhood of Grand Rapids. RFH is a LEED certified, 84,000 square foot, 5-story building. It is home to occupational therapy, recreational therapy, speech pathology, sonography, radiology and allied health programs. In the Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall, there are over 280 works of art. These pieces provide learning opportunities across many different fields of study with emphasis in this building given to the health sciences.

Lower Level

The lower level features photographs that provide a conceptual interpretation of sonography and cardiovascular sciences that were gifted the university by The Museum Project. [More Information]

1st Level

First level highlights works of art from the GVSU Art Gallery permanent collection (with emphasis on local artists), along with photographs made by Peter Fink, Raleigh Finkelstein’s uncle.  [More Information]

2nd Level

The second level features works of art that we would like to utilize in Visual Thinking Strategies programs.  There are groupings of images that are of patients or produced by patients.

The third level features works of art created by the Coit Creative Academy and works by one of GVSU’s charter schools in Flint, the Linden Charter School.  [More Information]

4th Level

This level features archival images of the Belknap neighborhood.  These images have been donated by the Grand Rapids City Archives and Grand Rapids Public Museum.  [More Information]

Building Information

• The 5-story building houses 16 teaching laboratories and 100 faculty and staff offices.
• The 84,000 square foot project was constructed to meet or exceed Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.
• Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall provides a home for Sonography, Cardiovascular Sciences, Therapeutic Recreation, Occupational Therapy, Health Information Management, Public Health, Communication Sciences & Disorders, and Allied Health programs that require intensive interactive learning spaces and the space to work as interprofessional teams.
• The expansion of classrooms and laboratory facilities create more opportunities for students to attain the foundation they need prior to their clinical experiences.
• Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall will permit Grand Valley to educate students in emerging technologies and graduate students to meet existing shortfalls within the healthcare business.
