SOCIAL EMOTIONAL ENGAGEMENT: THE “FUEL FOR LEARNING” IN THE CLASSROOM

- Description: Findings of research in social neuroscience of social emotional engagement foster our ability to create supportive learning environments where social emotional engagement is a "fuel" for a child's learning. A child's social emotional development, active engagement, and learning is fostered in an environment where he or she is "connected" with the social world. This begins as a child becomes compelled with the social world, increases their interactions and relationships, and ultimately develops skills to maintain those relationships over time. We can gauge our success in these areas by ensuring children are initiating with those around them, invested in what they are doing, and independently navigating through the social world. The Social Emotional Engagement - Knowledge and Skills (SEE-KS) program will be shared to ensure participants have access to a tool for measuring student engagement in natural settings and a framework for considering instructional strategies that enhance active engagement, emotional well-being, and academic success.
Toward Meaningful Outcomes from Kind Processes Addressing Problem Behavior of Persons with Autism

- Description: The dignity afforded to persons with autism and the humanity that is associated with attempting to understand why problem behavior is occurring prior to treating it is sometimes lost in functional analysis and function-based treatment processes. Progress towards humane, easily appreciated, and generally applicable functional assessment and treatment procedures will require a slight shift towards different assumptions, aims. and procedures; these will be highlighted while outcomes are described from practical functional assessment and treatment processes in which the person with autism was always free to participate in, alter, or opt out of their therapeutic process.
