From Arcade to Innovation Hub
Originally known as the Stone Arcade, the building was rebuilt after a fire and later became L.W. Robinson’s department store before being sold to the Grand Rapids-based Herpolsheimer’s (Herp’s). It subsequently served as a Federal Center annex before evolving into the Kendall Center.

Purpose
Grand Valley State University is continually reaching higher to serve all learners and create lasting value for the communities it supports.
In Battle Creek, this means bridging the gap in post-secondary educational attainment and developing a skilled workforce to meet the needs of industries across Southwest Michigan. These efforts are strengthening the regional labor force and enhancing the quality of life for local residents.
With support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and in partnership with Battle Creek Unlimited, GVSU is expanding its presence by redeveloping the Kendall Center and integrating its Regional Campus into the Battle Creek Innovation Hub. This investment reinforces GVSU’s commitment to education, workforce development, and community impact in Southwest Michigan.
Regional Center: Serves as GVSU’s regional center for Southwest Michigan, supporting GVSU locations and programming across 13 counties.
Community Enrichment: Expands professional development opportunities for small businesses and strengthens partnerships with local schools and agencies to enhance regional impact.
Increased Educational Access: Offers degree and certificate programs aligned with industry needs.

Workforce Development: Partners with local employers to create pathways for internships, co-ops, and professional growth in high-demand fields.
High-Demand Industries: Tailors programming in health, workforce development, manufacturing, business, and technical fields designed for current and new professionals.
Economic Advancement: Drives entrepreneurship, technology-driven solutions, and economic growth, with a strong focus on locally in-demand industries.

Youth Programming: Launches new K-12 programming focused on STEM, food innovation, and sustainability.
Dynamic Learning Environment: Facilities include classrooms, and dedicated spaces for afterschool and weekend K-12 activities, and summer youth programs.
