1. Tell us about your journey since graduation.
Since graduation, my journey has taken many unexpected but
rewarding turns. I began pursuing a PhD in Educational Leadership, but
commuting 1.5 hours each way daily took a toll on my health, so I took
a necessary break for rest and recovery. In the meantime, I’ve had the
privilege of working in a variety of roles: promoting service learning
at a university, advising middle and high school students on their
college paths, and serving as a senior leader at a nonprofit
supporting young people experiencing homelessness. Now, I’m back in
the nonprofit sector, supporting 40+ schools—ranging from early
childhood to high school—across six districts in Kent County.
Throughout these shifts, I’ve learned that life’s pivots are often
opportunities for growth, even when they stray from our original
plans. It’s important to have faith in the process, trust that each
step is part of the bigger picture, and embrace the journey, even if
it sometimes feels like I’m pouting in the corner. Plans WILL change,
but that’s okay—it’s all part of the path forward.
2. Share a favorite Grand Valley memory.
My favorite memory is planning and executing the first big event
for the GVSU Chapter of NAACP as the inaugural president. Our team
wanted to create an entertainment event that truly resonated with
students of color on campus, especially since most concerts featured
acts more popular with white students. We decided to bring in Emmanuel
and Philip Hudson, who were social media sensations at the time and
have since become well-known comedians. Securing a venue larger than
the Grand River Room was no small feat! We had to request special
permission to use the Performing Arts Center (now the Thomas J. and
Marcia J. Haas Center for Performing Arts). Due to previous concerns
about student-led events, access to this venue was typically
restricted. After a persuasive meeting with the officials, I secured
permission for both the main space and additional rooms for our acts.
Through this experience, I learned valuable skills in seeking funding
from the Student Senate, negotiating a contract with soon-to-be-famous
comedians, and advocating for student groups within the university.
The event turned out to be a huge success, providing a memorable
experience for a population that often felt overlooked. Our chapter's
Executive Board worked tirelessly, honing skills we still use
today—who knew event planning could be so empowering? It was a
fulfilling experience that demonstrated the power of collaboration and
community engagement.
3. What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
The best advice I’ve ever received is to embrace the journey and
remain open to change. Life is often unpredictable, and plans may not
always unfold as expected. This advice has encouraged me to pivot when
necessary and find opportunities in challenges. It reminds me that
growth often comes from stepping outside my comfort zone and being
adaptable. By keeping an open mind and focusing on the lessons learned
along the way, I can navigate my personal and professional path with
resilience and purpose.
4. List three words you would use to describe your Grand
Valley experience.
Innovative, impactful and inspiring
5. What difference would you like to make in the world?
I aspire to make a meaningful difference in the world by
advocating for equitable access to education and support for
underserved/underestimated communities. I believe education isn't just
about academics; it encompasses access to trusted and relevant
information that empowers and liberates individuals to make informed
decisions for themselves and their families. My goal is to uplift
young people, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds, and
help them actualize their full potential. By fostering environments
where everyone feels valued and supported, and by promoting
collaboration and community engagement, I hope to inspire positive
change that not only benefits individuals but also strengthens entire
communities. Together, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and
equitable future.
