What is your current job and what do you find exciting about it?
I am currently an Advanced Product Developer at 3M in the Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division. Currently, it's exciting to create new-to-the-world adhesives that are finding homes in everything from boats to electric vehicles. Seeing products that I helped develop is extremely rewarding. Also, scaling products in manufacturing is incredible to be a part of. Production is something that I never had an appreciation for in my undergraduate and graduate work.
How did your GVSU Chemistry/Biochemistry degree help you prepare you for the work that you do?
The biggest immediate impact of my GVSU Chemistry experience was how prepared I was for graduate school. Two of my classes at Akron used the same books that we used in our advanced undergraduate courses. Also, the opportunity to learn air-free synthetic techniques is not something that is offered at all undergraduate institutions. Couple the base knowledge with the advanced techniques, along with 2 years of undergraduate research gave me a leg up on most of my peers entering graduate school. In addition, observation of the teaching style of the GVSU faculty translated itself in my teaching style while I was in graduate school as well.
