1. Tell us about your journey since graduation.
At GVSC I explored a variety of subjects - sculpture, metalwork,
drawing, organic farming, women's poetry, etc. I had a variety of
employment opportunities after graduating, but 16 years later went
back for my Master's in Elementary Ed and then began a 23-year career
in teaching.
2. Share a favorite Grand Valley memory.
I lived in an old Allendale farmhouse with 3 other GVSC students
and would walk across the cornfields to attend my classes. I
discovered the love of photography even more deeply at college and had
the opportunity to use the large format camera and learn black &
white as well as color development of negatives and prints.
3. What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
I had a drawing class with Art Cadieux. We had a photo realism
assignment where you make a drawing by taking a photo, dividing it
into a grid, and then - by observing each square in the grid -
transfer and draw each section separately. I had done a quick
rendition shall we say. Art said something like, "That is not
good enough. Do it again." I was a little miffed, but then went
back and spent hours on it - creating a drawing I still treasure
today! So it was that firmness, commitment to discipline, and
expectation of excellence that has stayed with me over the years.
4. List three words you would use to describe your Grand
Valley experience.
Creative, expansive, flexible.
5. What difference would you like to make in the world?
I would like to help people discover the wonders of nature, to
enjoy it, protect & support it, and share it with others. To
realize their connection with all of this magnificent life around
them. To help them wake up to who they really are spiritually. To love
this natural world and free themselves from material consumerism and
mindless attachment to things. To care about one another - no matter
what their skin color, culture, etc.
