1. Tell us about your journey since graduation.
I was among the first students to receive credit for foreign
language study. In my junior year I spent in Germany attending the
University of Hamburg, 1967-68. German language and literature were my
focus with a goal of teaching German and art after graduation in 1969.
This I did but instead of teaching German, I taught ESL for most of my career.
2. Share a favorite Grand Valley memory.
In the winter the campus had a snow sculpture contest, pitting
the clubs against each other, I believe in 1966. We won with our ice
and snow sculpture of the Lubeck Germany Holstein Gate from the Middle
Ages, the entry to the Hanseatic city with a moat. Our gate was about
12 feet tall.
3. What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
I just met a GVSC graduate from the class of 1968 in a far corner
of the world! We were both on a bus tour of Tierra del Fuego, the very
southern end of the Pan-American Highway in Chile (Fairbanks Alaska is
the northern end)! We were two Grand Valley graduates from the 1960s.
How random is that? Anne McAuley Class of '69 and Randy Hertzstein,
Class of '68! I have a picture of us. We were actually on a 22-day
cruise to Antarctica, for which this bus trip was an excursion. Also,
we discovered that we were only a couple of doors from each other on
the cruise, but didn't realize that we were both from GVSU's very
early days.
