Chemistry Alumni in Action
John Stockdale, '21
What is your current position and what do you find exciting about it?
I currently work as a Post-Bachelor Researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory. At Los Alamos, I participate in a wide range of subjects such as polymer chemistry, additive manufacturing, and material science. I will soon be transitioning to Auburn University to pursue my doctorate in Polymer & Fiber Engineering. What I find most exciting about my field is the wide range of topics, instruments, and scientists I get to work with, as well as participating in projects from start to end.
How did your GVSU Chemistry/Biochemistry degree help you prepare for your position?
The lecture and lab courses I took at GVSU gave me a great baseline understanding of the topics I work with today. Being able to use that knowledge, along with participating in Dr. Thorgaard’s research lab my last year of undergrad, gave me the introductory skills I needed to begin my career in a research environment.
