Chemistry Alumni in Action
Jess Mazzon, '19
What is your current position and what do you find exciting about it?
I am a nuclear engineer in the Navy. While still in school at GVSU, I got accepted into the Navy NUPOC program and commissioned as an Officer after graduation. I worked on the submarine USS Kentucky for three years and went on four patrols. I really enjoyed the stressful situations I was put in and leadership opportunities leading a team maintaining a nuclear reactor.
How did your GVSU Chemistry/Biochemistry degree help you prepare for your position?
While on the submarine, I was the Chemistry and Radiological Controls Officer. I was in charge of maintaining the water chemistry of the reactor plant. Grand Valley State University's vast curriculum helped me understand the lab setting and gave me tools necessary to succeed in this role.
