1. Tell us about your journey since graduation.
Since graduating from GVSU, I started in Case Western Reserve University’s Biomedical Science Training Program. After completing my initial rotations in three different labs, I joined Heather Broihier’s lab in the Department of Neurosciences in December 2022. In the Broihier Lab, we are particularly interested in neurodevelopment and the pathways underlying synapse formation, maintenance, and activity-dependent refinement. To address these topics we utilize Drosophila, a remarkable model system that allows us to employ sophisticated genetic and imaging techniques. Since joining the lab, I have had the opportunity to attend and share my research at multiple scientific conferences at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, learned concepts and techniques from distinguished researchers, and advanced into candidacy. In my personal life, I have established lifelong relationships while in graduate school, navigated life in a new city/state, and most importantly, got married and started another new adventure. My experiences at Grand Valley thoroughly prepared me to step into the next chapter of my life as a graduate student. I am so thankful for all of the opportunities and relationships GV provided me with!

2. Share a favorite Grand Valley memory.
There are way too many to list! One of my favorite memories at GVSU is having the opportunity to present my research at the Investiture Student Showcase for President Mantella’s inauguration Fall of 2019. Additionally, I loved being part of the CMB department where it was easy to establish relationships because of how small and personal the department was. This truly shaped my GV experience and I wouldn't trade it for the world! My GV experience would not have been the same if it wasn't for Dr. Hart and her dedication to me as a student and researcher. This allowed me to experience so many wonderful opportunities and make countless memories in 4 short years.

3. What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
The best piece of advice I’ve ever received is to keep trying despite the setbacks. You never know what could be around the corner!

4. List three words you would use to describe your Grand Valley experience.
Wholesome, insightful and strengthening.

5. What difference would you like to make in the world?
Scientifically, I would like to be a part of cutting-edge research that is life-changing for even a single person. The discoveries in research might seem minor and mundane day-to-day, however the impact can be bigger than we could imagine. Sometimes the little things are what completes the whole picture, and as a researcher, I aspire to help others in some way, shape, or form, even if it is just in the small outcomes.
