Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Geography

Requirements for a Major in Geography

Students majoring in geography are required to complete a minimum of 36 credits. Majors are required to complete four core courses:

The remainder of the requirements (24 credit hours) is comprised of electives that students select in close consultation with their academic advisor. Students must complete a minimum of 15 credit hours offered by the Department of Geography and Sustainable Planning. The remaining 9 hours may be selected from cognate courses from other departments listed among Geography electives in consultations with your academic advisor.

Geography majors generally focus their electives beyond in certain areas of academic interest (for example, geospatial technology (computer cartography, Geographic Information Systems, remote sensing, and image processing), sustainable urban and regional planning, environmental geography, and regional and global studies). However, it is suggested that a certain breadth across these areas is desirable to provide flexibility and marketability in the search for employment and/or acceptance in graduate school. GPY 490 Internship is strongly recommended and can be taken as a part of geography major (1-5 credits per semester). GPY 380/381 Study Abroad, GPY 399 Independent Readings and GPY 499 Independent Research can be taken as a part of Geography major. No more than six hours of GPY 399 and GPY 499 combines may count toward the major.

All Bachelor of Arts programs require a third-semester proficiency in a classical or modern language.

When incorporated into the major, three sciences courses will lead to Bachelors of Science degree in sustainable geography and planning. Notice, STA 215 and GPY 300 are required science courses for the BS degree. The third course should be selected in close consultation with your advisor.
