Master of Education in Instruction and Curriculum in Science
The M.Ed. in instruction and curriculum in science is offered by the College of Education in cooperation with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Departments of biology, chemistry, geology, and physics. The content specialization is designed to 1) provide teacher participants with an authentic science laboratory research experience in the area of their specialty (biology, chemistry, geology or physics), and 2) facilitate the integration of their research experience into their classroom through the design, implementation, and evaluation of inquiry-based curricula.
Admission
Admission to the M.Ed. in instruction and curriculum program with a science concentration requires a teaching certification with a major or minor in biology, chemistry, earth science, or physics, or a major in integrated science, and employment as a middle or high school science teacher concurrent with enrollment in SCI 632. Students must submit three letters of recommendation, transcripts of all previous coursework, and copies of teaching certificates. Students must have a 3.0 or higher G.P.A. calculated on the last 60 credits of undergraduate work or a prior master's degree. Curriculum Overview
The program consists of a minimum of 33 hours, including a minimum of 18 hours (at least six courses) in education and a minimum of 15 hours (seven courses) in science.
Upon admission to the program, the students will meet with a College of Education advisor and a science education advisor from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who will evaluate all previous science course work taken in the major and/or minor. A curricular plan reflecting the student's needs, interests, and goals will be agreed upon.
