CLAS Internship Funding Information
CLAS Internship Funding provides monetary support for undergraduates who obtain an internship to investigate career options, develop skills, and link classroom learning to the world of work. Internship Funding is available thanks to the generous gifts of the CLAS Dean’s Office and Supporters who believe in the importance of experiential opportunities.
Eligibility
Eligible for Funding

Undergraduate students who are enrolled as full-time students during the academic year (and/or enrolled in a minimum of three credit hours in the summer).

Enrolled in the GVSU (Grand Valley State University) College of Arts & Sciences for at least one degree program.

Registered for Internship Credit (390, 490, or equivalent). For questions on whether your experience qualifies as an internship, see the internship overview page.
Not Eligible for Funding

Internships that are not completed for academic credit.

Summer research opportunities mentored by a GVSU Faculty member –summer research projects are eligible for funding through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship.

Entrepreneurial projects that do not have a clear student learning objective or mentor/supervisor in place.

CCEL reserves the right to determine whether an application is ineligible on a case-by-case basis.
Applying

Search for and secure an internship. If you need assistance, meet with a staff member or peer career advisor in the GVSU Career Center or set up an appointment with someone in the CLAS Center for Experiential Learning through Navigate. The opportunity must be secured before applying for funding, and you will need to upload a copy of your internship offer letter or confirmation as part of your application.

Application Deadline – Funding for each academic year is due by the end of the first week of the fall and winter semesters.
Creating a Strong Application
As with any application, we encourage you to put reflection, time, and effort into your funding application. Please schedule an appointment with the GVSU Writing Center for assistance in writing the career goals. If you have questions about the application in general, feel free to schedule an appointment through Navigate with a Center for Experiential Learning staff member.
Check the application scoring rubric (below) to understand how applications are evaluated. Applications will be reviewed by a team consisting of CLAS Faculty, CLAS Dean’s Office, Career Center, and Financial Aid Representatives.

Evaluation and Payment Process for Internships
Applications are evaluated based on the funding requested, the completeness and quality of the application, the budget justification, and career impact statements. Please see the application rubric below to craft a competitive application. As with any academic assignment, please refrain from using AI to generate your responses in total.
Award amounts are based on the budget submitted. They typically range from $1,000 to a max of $2,500.
