Associate Dean Stansbie moderates panel discussion

Associate Dean Stansbie of the College of Community and Public Service moderated a panel on the work being done at the high school level on promoting meaningful careers in the Hospitality and Tourism industries to students of color.  Trying to introduce students to the industry early by offering high school elective classes starting in 9th grade, along with partnering them with industry mentors and facilitating tours of various establishments from hotels to restaurants and attractions.  The goal is to offer classes 9th-12th grade in order to show how they can see a career in these industries at a managerial level (not simply line level jobs).  Discussed how the academies at Ottawa Hills High School in Grand Rapids and one at Romeo High School in Romeo, MI were established and how other communities can develop their own partnerships with their Public School systems to enable more students to find a pathway to college and or a career in these growing industries.
