The impact of internships for Haley Rothe

Haley Rothe is an undergraduate student within the School of Criminal Justice and has been a champion of experiential learning!

She has interned in two different realms of juvenile justice, and is currently pursuing a third opportunity.

Her first internship in the summer of 2019 was with Ingham County Juvenile Probation.  This experience was VERY challenging.  Haley worked with high-risk youth in an alternative school setting.  Not only did she work directly at developing relationships with high-risk youth, but it was also impressive how much Haley grew in her interaction with professionals, communication and writing skills.

Haley’s second internship in the winter of 2020 was at the Ottawa County Juvenile Detention Center, specifically working with the Lighthouse Girls Treatment Program.  Haley assisted with the treatment plans of the girls in the program and again developed caring relationships with the girls and the staff.

She is currently working within another agency and is in the process of applying to graduate school.  Haley plans to graduate GVSU in December of 2020.

Haley has also assisted Visiting Professor Laura Marsh with speaking engagements in which she shared her internship experiences.  Professor Marsh writes, "Haley's viewpoints are very valuable given that the internships have not only moved her out of her comfort zone with public speaking, but also with self-confidence to work with youth and the other professionals far beyond what she thought was possible".

We wish Haley all the best as she continues her educational journey!
