Mission

The CECI Fellows Program aims to provide high-impact learning experiences for all participants as they develop themselves into empowered and engaged members of GVSU and society. Through intentional and iterative design, the program maintains core aspects which adapt to the needs and attributes of students in our programs – pairing students with mentors and professionals, providing social and co-curricular programming throughout the academic year, allowing opportunities for reflection, and adjusting through a system of regular feedback and assessment. While the initial goal is to retain students as valued Laker students, this mentor program aims to highlight the benefits of being a Laker for Life.

Our peer mentor program is designed to provide leadership for participants in the College of Education and Community Innovation (CECI) with the following programs: Hospitality and Tourism Management; Social Work; Legal Studies; Public, Non-profit, and Health Administration; and Criminal Justice. CECI Fellows Mentors assist in supporting students as they navigate Grand Valley and learn about their major.

Mentors in the CECI Fellowship are essential to the mission of our program. By moving toward our shared vision and learning objectives, mentors and mentees will be a part of our high-impact, community building program.

Vision

The CECI Fellowship is a peer mentor initiative, designed to create and maintain a community for participating CECI students. The primary goal is to provide empathetic and empowering support through relationships among experienced and novice college students, while also supporting a sense of community, opportunities for professional development, and ways to prepare for post-graduation.

Learning Objectives

Students participating in our CECI Fellowship will –

  1. Experience an increase in self-efficacy (“I believe I can reach my goals”)
  2. Experience an increase in self-motivation/determination (“I want to achieve my goals for myself”)
  3. Experience an increase in self-awareness (“I know what I want to achieve and why”)
  4. Experience an increase in their sense of belonging (“I feel included, accepted, and valuable to my community”

Mentors in the CECI Fellowship will be asked to wear many hats as they personalize their approach to mentorship. We expect them to act as a guide, ambassador, advocate, friend, and reference as they relate to the individual needs of their mentee.
