Intern stories
Mitch Fedewa, AWRI
What projects did you take part in during your internship?
I primarily worked on a personal project exploring mercury loads in chironomid larva (a species of midge whose larva are a common food source for fish) but I also spent time aboard AWRI's research vessels doing outreach and participated in regular monitoring of a number of Muskegon county beaches for E. coli and HABs.
How did you get the internship?
I heard about the internship from a friend who had interned the year prior and had only great things to say about the experience. The application process involved submitting a resume, a short essay outlining past academic performance as well as an interest in water resources, and a formal application. The formal application also has you access the AWRI webpage and rank which researcher you would be interested in working with, an exercise I found gratifying.
