What is your current position and what do you find exciting about it?

I am a bioinformatics scientist and my primary focus is writing software that processes and analyzes data from single-cell next-generation sequencing experiments.  The most exciting part of my job is working with chemists and biologists to create products that promote scientific discovery and advance medical research.

How did your GVSU CHM/BIC degree help prepare you for your work?

To be able to write software that analyzes experimental data, its critical to understand the underlying chemistry that occurs in the experiments.  My degree in chemistry gave me the foundational knowledge that I use to determine the questions the software needs to answer, identify how best to collect that information from the raw data, and present the data in a meaningful way that promotes accurate interpretation.
