Enhancing the Student Experience in the LMS and Beyond
Thinking about the entire experience student have with your institution, whether the student is on campus or online, so much of it centers on the LMS. Leveraging many of the new features, flows, and functionality of Ultra can enhance that experience. But we must think beyond the LMS to how students are supported in all their interactions with your institution.
This session will highlight some of the possibilities that Ultra presents and will also discuss how we can support our students in a broader context, and how critical that is currently. Data from a recent global survey will be shown which highlight what students hope we can provide for them -- and what we are providing them.

A Shared Journey: Leveraging Bb Ultra Adoption for Course Redesign When two eLearning liaisons were newly assigned to GVSU’s Health Campus, not only were we planning the transition to Bb Ultra, the Kirkhof College of Nursing graduate programs were undergoing a curriculum revision. Joining the curriculum task force was instrumental in forming relationships between faculty and the liaisons and provided an opportunity for eLearning staff to learn nuances of the degree programs. After considering the pros and cons of our Classic Blackboard platform and the incoming Bb Ultra, the faculty made the decision that all graduate courses for the incoming Fall ’22 cohort would be in Ultra. This decision helped us to leverage the impending LMS change to collaborate on course development and to reinforce instructional design best practices. Benefits received include that program faculty became Ultra early adopters and eLearning champions. Participants in this session will hear lessons we learned through our journey and we will facilitate discussion to learn from your experiences. |

The Transition to Ultra: Things That Make you go Hmmm As institutions launch their Transition-to-Ultra planning, this Top 10 list provides items that are not often mentioned in the migration discussion but are details that shouldn’t be overlooked. As CMU dove deeper into their Ultra migration, these are the things we found along the way that made us go “Hmm”, such as: |

Data GALORE! - Don't Be Overwhelmed: Some Strategies for Tackling the Data Beast! DATA - NUMBERS, PERCENTAGES, VALUES - INFORMATION STREAMS and HIERARCHIES - INTEGRITY & SECURITY & QUALITY, etc. etc. etc. Too often in life and work, we are inundated with "data" from which interpretation of that data should inform and lead to decision-making. In this presentation, the co-presenters from Anthology's Professional Services Consulting Data Solutions team will share some key strategies to help session participants consider how they can review current approaches to the data collected or not collected in their areas and how to develop a data strategy framework that can help them identify, gather, review, and use for decision making. The presenters will use examples drawn from academia more broadly (such as a best practices checklist for creating an institutional data strategy framework, the role of data governance within the institution, understanding data quality, and identifying the role and drivers for gathering, reviewing, and using the data!). The role of Learn and the data it contains for its various users will be situated in this broader institutional data strategy. This interactive presentation will ask audience members to rank or order data requests, data sources, data drivers, and data challenges as the presenters discuss the key strategies and considerations audience participants can use for beating back and/or taming the DATA BEAST. |

GVSU's Accreditation Dilemma: Creating A Cross-functional Framework for Data Gathering and Analysis Effective assessment of student learning outcomes lies at the heart of accreditation efforts for any institution. This session will describe how Grand Valley State University partnered with Anthology Consulting, Learn Ultra, and EAC Visual Data to establish a cross-functional team framework to support and develop a technology-enhanced assessment process so that academic programs could more effectively capture and analyze student learning data in support of their improvement initiatives. |

Lessons Learned from the Pioneer Trail Grand Valley State University has a student population of approximately 23,000 students and 1,900 instructors and has been busy preparing for a university-wide adoption of Bb Learn Ultra in May 2023. The move from Bb Learn Original to Bb Learn Ultra has been an incredible opportunity to create new faculty support models, redesign training efforts, and develop strategies for internal and external communications. This presentation will review a variety of change management strategies that GVSU eLearning Technologies put into practice, including suggestions for engaging with key stakeholders and tips for recruiting champions of change. |

Accommodating the Accommodations: Utilizing Blackboard Ultra and Ally to Tailor the Learning Experience When faculty receive an accommodation letter from the disability support office, they are often left to figure out how to make the accommodation work. Blackboard Ultra, along with Ally, provide tools to make the accommodating process easier. This workshop will demonstrate what the tools are, how to use them, and how all students in your courses can benefit from them. |

Roadmaps? Where we're going, we're gonna need roadmaps Doc Brown's famous advice to Marty McFly was, "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything." In this session, we'll go back in time to look at how Schoolcraft College made the leap from the past (Blackboard Original) to the future (Blackboard Ultra) - simultaneously launching over 99% of courses in Ultra in January 2023. We'll walk through the planning process, successes, pitfalls, and lessons learned. We'll look back in time, gaze into the future, and (hopefully) have a little fun along the way. After all, if you're gonna build a path to Ultra - you might as well do it with some style. |

Orienting Students to Blackboard Ultra! Transitioning students from one LMS to another can be a daunting task for any institution. Online student orientations can easily become a secondary issue during an LMS migration. This can leave faculty wondering how to ensure students know how to use the tools in the new LMS. After this session attendees will walk away with a global institutional approach to how they can orienting students to Blackboard Ultra. |

Learn+Goals+Outcomes+EAC - Providing Efficiencies and Insights into Student Performance This co-presented presentation will demonstrate and discuss what is called Blackboard's Assessment Solution and the efficiencies and insights this combination of tools, along with our services, can provide Learn clients. EAC is the single reporting, analytics, and visualization portal for excavating student performance data across rubrics with rows aligned to Goals embedded in courses, exams with questions aligned to Goals, or from rubrics used to review student work outside the course through Outcomes. We will showcase key functionality through references to our Michigan and surrounding state clients who are using either this inside the course (primary) and/or outside the course (juried) process leveraging Learn Original and Ultra to efficiently and effectively gather student performance data on their institutional, program, accreditor, and course level student outcomes. We will use some polling and audience engagement activities (with prizes) to ask the audience to reflect and comment on their institution's assessment and accreditation challenges and share ideas and ask questions for how Learn + Goals + Outcomes + EAC might help them meet these challenges. We will close the session with an overview (roadmap) of the EAC assessment analytics software within Anthology's larger data strategy and emerging client requests for competency based reporting, student skills insights, and helping students, instructors, chairs, and Programs better understand how to improve teaching and learning. |

5 Steps for Course Design with Ultra Grand Valley State University has 2000 instructors who are transitioning their courses from Blackboard Original to Ultra, in serving a student population of approximately 23,000 students. Switching faculty to a new LMS has created an opportunity to rethink and recreate training and support for faculty members learning to build their courses. We have created a 5 Step process for building a course in Ultra, which focuses on pedagogy and practice, with faculty action items to complete for each of the 5 steps. The faculty training uses Backward Design, course mapping, and includes consideration for Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and online teaching best practices. |

Hypothesis: Collaborative Annotation Tool for Blackboard Learn Ultra Studies suggest the use of social annotation and the co-creation of knowledge encourages student engagement while raising awareness of the importance of open and collaborative practices. With Hypothesis, instructors can support student success by placing active discussions right on top of their course readings. In addition to learning about the pedagogical best practices for collaborative annotation, participants can expect to come away with a clear idea of how they can start incorporating collaborative annotation into their course. |
