Project Abstract
DeWys Manufacturing requested a machine to be built to reduce hours spent sorting powder coating caps and plugs. The silicone caps and plugs are washed with abrasive material so that they are able to be reused. Currently, the caps and plugs are sorted by hand from the abrasive washing material and then sorted into their respective categories. Our solution involves two stages of sorting in which the first stage separates the silicone caps and plugs from the ceramic
abrasive, and the second stage sorts the caps and plugs by their outermost diameter. The first stage of sorting utilized a tank of water with a current flowing from one end to the other. When the mixture of parts is dropped in one end, the ceramic parts sink quickly and the silicone caps and plugs flow with the current to the next stage of sorting. The second stage consists of two diverging rollers, where the rollers rotate in an upward direction and are slightly angled downward. The silicone caps and plugs are fed between the rollers and move down the length of them until the gap between is larger than the outermost diameter. The parts then fall into collection bins below.
