Project Abstract
T&T Tools primary product is the Mighty Probe. It is an insulated soil/tile probe that is used for locating items buried in the ground. Items that are commonly located are: gas transmission lines, water lines, sewer laterals, and septic tanks. The Mighty Probe consists of a T-shaped handle and a rod that varies in length from 30” up to 18’ or more in length when combined with rod couplers. The T-shaped handle is molded around a threaded insert which will occasionally but rarely shift out of a square alignment. T&T Tools currently tests the run out of all their molded handles for proper alignment, but the process is rather time consuming. To address this issue, a new method of measuring the Mighty Probe’s threaded insert squareness was designed. This design utilizes an inclinometer that will be placed inside the threaded insert to measure the angle out of square in two dimensions. The inclinometer will eliminate the need to thread a shaft into the handle, while
instantaneously measuring the angle out of square. Additionally, a PLC will be used to power the inclinometer as well as capture measuring data that can be analyzed statistically.
