Abstract

This project consisted of designing a system to automate the process of pressing a woodruff key into a camshaft. To complete this, an operator loads the shaft into a mounting system that detects the location of the keyway and rotates the shaft so it is facing upward. Keys are sorted using a custom-made centrifugal sorting system. The keys are then transferred to a pneumatic press where they are lowered and inserted into the keyway. A load cell and displacement sensor are used to evaluate if the key was inserted correctly based on desired windows found during testing. The entire cycle is to be completed in one minute or less. Our design must also consider that the sponsoring company plans to incorporate a robot to load/unload camshafts in the future.
