Dr. Hawthorne was a 2022-2024 National Geographic Explorer. He is broadly trained in GIS and human geography with expertise in community geography/engagement, geographic education, Participatory GIS, environmental education, and unoccupied aerial vehicles (UAV drones). In 2015, he founded an internationally recognized research and education group called Citizen Science GIS.

His research team launched the USA’s first GeoBus, a mobile Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math (STEAM) education lab powered by solar energy to provide geospatial technology learning experiences to K-12 youth, families, and teachers in Florida. He is working to build a mobile learning lab experience called GeoBus  International to meet the needs of school children in BELIZE.
