Guest Artist Lecture/Recital: "Chopin's Private World" Takeshi Nagayasu, piano

Takeshi Nagayasu is an unusually versatile and multifaceted pianist who has been recognized and won many top prizes in competitions such as the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin, Jacob Flier, Rosamond Haeberle, Borderland Chopin International, and the International Robert Schumann Competition in Germany. He has performed in prominent venues such as Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall and Town Hall in New York City. He was featured in a radio interview on All Classical Portland Radio "Thursdays at Three." He is a recipient of multiple scholarships including awards from the Feltsman Piano Foundation, as well as the Evelyn Bonar Storrs Scholarship from the Musical Club of Hartford. He also received full scholarships to attend major music festivals including Pianosummer at New Paltz and International Keyboard Institute & Festival in New York, and Gijón International Piano Festival in Spain.
In addition to piano, Takeshi is also a composer who has written numerous pieces for piano, chamber ensembles, and chamber orchestra. His music has been performed and premiered in the Portland International Piano Festival, Stamps Auditorium and Britton Hall at the University of Michigan, Paul Hall at Juilliard, and the Gijón International Piano Festival in Spain. He has played organ in masses in the Most Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church and the Holy Innocents Roman Catholic Church in New York. He also has worked as a collaborative pianist at Juilliard, Silver Music, and Morse Summer Academy, played piano and celesta part in the Yale Philharmonia Orchestra and University Philharmonia Orchestra at the University of Michigan.
Takeshi studied at Juilliard, Yale, and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in piano performance at the University of Michigan. His teachers include Logan Skelton, Vladimir Feltsman, Melvin Chen, Boris Berman, Joseph Kalichstein, Matti Raekallio, Antonio Pompa-Baldi, and Xiaohe Xie. Composition studies were with Philip Lasser. Takeshi studied organ with Isaac Lee and Theodore Cheng. He has taught both solo piano lessons as well as in the classroom at Yale and the University of Michigan. He was also a teaching artist in the Music in Schools Initiative Program for creative music making classes, and has given master classes at California Polytechnic State University in 2019.
Takeshi enjoys watching soccer matches during his free time. He is a supporter of FC Barcelona, Manchester City, and NYCFC.
