Guest Artist Recital: Cercis String Quartet

The Cercis String Quartet is a group of friends committed to fostering human connection through a shared passion for music. Violinists Sun Huh & Nathaniel Shapiro, violist Christopher Alley and cellist Kevin Flynn are alumni of the Indiana University Bloomington Jacobs School of Music. Since 2021, the quartet has been critically well-received throughout the Midwest and Ohio River valley for their engaging and dynamic performances.

Highlights of the 2022–23 season include a residency with the International Chamber Orchestra of Puerto Rico including a recital and masterclasses, as well as outreach events for children across the island of Puerto Rico. Their Fall 2022 tour included recitals in Vincennes, IN, and Grand Valley State University, MI, culminating in a featured performance in the Absolute Music Chamber Series in Lansing, MI, broadcast live on WKAR. In October 2022, the quartet collaborated with Indiana University Jacobs School of Music’s Latin American Music Center to spotlight the music of Costa Rican composer Rocío Sanz Quirós as part of their Salón Latino Chamber Music Series.

The Cercis Quartet enjoys collaborations with other artists, including recitals of the Brahms and Mozart Clarinet quintets with clarinetist Kirsten Ahnell, and the Dvorak Piano Quintet Op. 81 with pianist Garnet Ungar.

The quartet’s name comes from the botanical name for the Eastern redbud tree, which flowers in abundance every spring in Bloomington.
