Open Minds Book Club: The Myth of Left and Right: How the Political Spectrum Misleads and Harms America

Thank you for your interest in participating in the Open Minds Book Club!

For the November 2023 session of Open Minds, we will be reading and discussing  The Myth of Left and Right: How the Political Spectrum Misleads and Harms America by Hyrum Lewis and Verlan Lewis.

As American politics descends into a battle of anger and hostility between two groups called "left" and "right," people increasingly ask: What is the essential difference between these two ideological groups? In The Myth of Left and Right, the authors provide the surprising answer: nothing. Powerfully argued and cutting against the grain of most scholarship on polarization in America, this book shows why the idea that the political spectrum measures deeply held worldviews is the central political myth of our time.

The discussion for this book will be held on Wednesday, November 29, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Richard M. DeVos Center’s Meijer Regency Room located on the GVSU Pew Campus.

Thanks to the generous support of our Hauenstein Center members, we are able to make copies of this book available for free to the first 20 individuals to register.

Please order or request your copy of the book by November 15th to allow time for shipping and to enjoy the reading before the discussion.
