Latinx culture is so extensive and has become such an integral part of American culture that what it means to “be Latinx” in the United States is indistinct and ever-changing. A Single Thread/ Un Solo Hilo seeks to bring greater understanding to this complexity by highlighting the work of 13 Latinx artists from West Michigan. The artists, representing various countries and cultures of origin, offer unique perspectives through a multitude of mediums that examine connections to indigenous histories, hip-hop culture, immigration stories, queer community, agriculture, climate change, disability, identity, trauma, and racism in sports. Curated by Steff Rosalez, CEO at Grandville Avenue Arts & Humanities and a leading arts and social justice advocate in Grand Rapids, this exhibition invites the viewer to think critically about the origins of these works and to journey alongside these artists.
