Science On Tap, co-sponsored by GVSU and SpeakEZ Lounge, is an opportunity for conversation, debate, and interaction between scientists and the public while drinking beer. Each month at SpeakEZ, a knowledgeable expert hosts a scientific discussion about current topics in the news such as Ebola and the paleo diet. This is a great chance to exercise your academic interests in a casual setting while enjoying great food and adult beverages.

Title: Booze And Botany: Adventures In Plant Biology And Eastern European Culture Through The Lens Of Alcohol

Speaker: Steve Rybczynski, Dept. of Biology, Grand Valley State University

Event Description:

The chemical and physical properties of alcohol make it suitable as a solvent, preservative, and libation. In this talk, Dr. Rybczynski will discuss the cultural and historical use of ethanol in making plant-based extracts and tinctures, both medicinal and recreational. Special attention will be given to the science and art of making Polish nalewka (nah-LEV-kah) from fruits, roots, and leaves. Tried and tested recipes will be provided.
