As the 2023-2024 Distinguished Padnos Artist in Residence at Grand Valley State University, Kate Levy is producing work for her ongoing project, The Fate of the Machinery. The project is based on her family’s multigenerational industrial auction company, which liquidated the equipment of shuttered factories across the world and in West Michigan. One company was called Gulf + Western.
In January, Levy will present an artistic lecture on her work in progress, including her research, and the stories of communities that Gulf + Western leveraged and then left behind.
