The School of Communications Celebrates 40 Years of Excellence

Grand Valley State University’s School of Communications (SOC) is marking four decades of excellence with an ‘80s-themed celebration on October 10, 2024, at the GVSU Alumni House. The event, scheduled from 5:30 to 8 p.m., will pay tribute to 40 years of communications education and honor the extraordinary career of Dr. Alexander Nesterenko.

Dr. Nesterenko, whose 40+ year tenure at GVSU has been marked by mentorship, leadership, and his iconic yellow legal pads, will be recognized for his invaluable contributions to the School. In his honor, the Dr. Alex Nesterenko Graduate Student Endowment Fund has been established, aiming to reach a $50,000 goal to support future communication scholars.

The evening will feature alumni speakers spanning the last four decades and a special address by Keith Donovan, SOC advertising and public relations alum (1997) and CEO of Airfoil Group in Detroit, Michigan, who will speak about “the next 40 years” in communications.

The event will include a plated dinner, networking opportunities, and activities that reflect the School’s vibrant history. Proceeds from ticket sales will directly contribute to the Dr. Alexander Nesterenko Graduate Student Endowment Fund. All monetary gifts from GVSU faculty, staff, and students, will be matched by an anonymous donor.
