Students raise funds for veterans assistance program

Students from Grand Valley’s Student Veteran Organization and a teambuilding class in the Seidman College of Business raised funds for a local veterans assistance program in April.

More than $1,000 was donated to the West Michigan Veterans Assistance Program, an organization that offers services to veterans, including gas and food cards, assistance with housing and utilities, clothing and furniture, an on-site pantry, funds for prescriptions, dental care, eye exams and reading glasses.

“The purpose of this project was to raise money to support members of our community who we share a personal connection with,” said Lauren Vanderklok, a student who is part of the group in the Management 345 Teambuilding course. “The funds raised will help to provide basic necessities for homeless and impoverished veterans.”

Members of the group set up tables in the Kirkhof Center to raise awareness about the West Michigan Veterans Assistance Program and to collect donations. The group of students in the teambuilding class are Keontre Miskel, Tayler Wood and Brett Reardon. Student veterans and SVO members who also helped are Steven Brown and Eric Cederholm.
