Safety reminders against theft

With increased outdoor activities during the spring and summer months, Pew Campus Security is reminding students, faculty, staff and visitors to take steps to safeguard valuables inside vehicles.

• Do not leave purses, GPS units, laptops or any other valuables visible. Lock these items in the trunk or in the glove compartment, out of view of suspects looking for easy targets.

• Close all windows and convertible tops; even parking permits are valuable.

• When leaving your vehicle, always check to make sure the doors are locked. Even if you are just “running in for a minute.” It only takes that long for someone passing by to open an unlocked door and take something of value.

• Be alert to your surroundings when walking in the parking lots. You might notice someone looking in vehicles. If so, call Pew Campus Security or in the event of an emergency dial 911.

• Always look toward a car alarm going off, we often ignore the sound.

• Park in a Grand Valley authorized lot when possible.

To report suspicious activity, call Pew Campus Security at (616) 331-6677.
