The Flint Cultural Center Academy, a Grand Valley-authorized charter school that will focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and math, is under construction after a groundbreaking ceremony took place June 26.

The academy will feature activities for students at many area institutions that are managed by the Flint Cultural Center, including the Sloan Museum, the Flint Institute of Music, the Flint Institute of Arts, and the Longway Planetarium.

Construction of the $35 million school, which will serve students in kindergarten through eighth grade, has been funded in large part by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.

Grand Valley's Charter Schools Office is the school authorizer; it will be operated by EL Education, a national nonprofit that specializes in K-12 education.

The school will open in 2019, and will initially serve 300 students in K-5, with sixth, seventh, and eighth grades added in 2020, 2021 and 2022, respectively. The school's maximum enrollment is 650 students.

The school will primarily serve students from Flint and other areas of Genessee County.
