No. 7 Lakers square off against Kentucky State on Community Night

The Grand Valley football team returns to Lubbers Stadium this weekend, facing Kentucky State at 7 p.m. on October 7 in the first meeting between the two programs.

The Lakers (3-1), ranked No. 7 in the American Football Coaches Association poll, are rolling on a three-game winning streak, following their 55-14 win over Saginaw Valley State on September 30.

Two Lakers earned conference honors for their performances against the Cardinals. Defensive end Niles King and receiver Kellen Reed were named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week and the GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively.

King registered 2.5 quarterback sacks, 4.5 total tackles and forced a fumble to lead the Lakers’ defensive efforts while Reed returned two kickoffs for 116 yards, including a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Since its season-opening win, Kentucky State (1-4) has struggled with four straight losses against its conference opponents. Quarterback Denim Johnson is the Thorobreds’ top offensive threat, leading the team in passing and rushing.

As part of the Community Night festivities, the GVSU Laker Marching Band will be joined by Kentucky State’s Mighty Marching Thorobred Band in a Battle of the Bands competition and post-game performances.
