Northern Michigan up next for No. 2 Lakers

After knocking off the No. 1 ranked team in the country, Grand Valley faces a long road trip to meet Northern Michigan at 1 p.m. on October 21 in Marquette.

A rousing 49-28 victory over rival Ferris State at Lubbers Stadium on October 14 propelled the Lakers to the No. 2 spot on D2football.com’s national poll, their highest ranking since the preseason.

Quarterback Avery Moore and linebacker Anthony Cardamone earned GLIAC weekly honors for their impressive games against the Bulldogs. 

Moore rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns and also threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kyle Nott that made Saturday’s Top-10 Plays segment on ESPN’s SportsCenter. 

Cardamone recorded a career-high 11 tackles, four tackles for loss, three quarterback sacks and an interception returned for a touchdown that was part of the Lakers’ incredible first half. He was also honored as national defensive player of the week by D2football.com.

Grand Valley (5-1, 2-0 in GLIAC) has been dominant in the series with Northern Michigan, winning 17 of 18 from the Wildcats since their first meeting in 2002. The Lakers beat Northern Michigan, 56-3, last season, the largest margin of victory in the series’ history.

Northern Michigan (0-7, 0-3 in GLIAC) has struggled this season, surrendering 42.7 points and 490.5 yards per game.
