GVSU sponsoring International Hospitality Students Day

Hospitality and tourism students from around the world will get the opportunity to listen and connect with some of the industry’s top executives and insiders, thanks to a no-cost, online event, courtesy of Grand Valley State University.

The inaugural International Hospitality Students Day, an all-day livestream event, will unite students, educators, professionals and anyone interested in the tourism and hospitality industry. Deborah Gardner, CMP, a 30-year hospitality veteran, will host and lead the discussion on her webcast, Hospitality Today Live.

The livestream begins on Hospitality Today Live’s Facebook , LinkedIn and YouTube channels, beginning at 9 a.m. EDT on Friday, October 4.

GVSU students can receive credit for participating, by visiting Handshake and registering prior to the event.

“We envision International Hospitality Students Day becoming an annual global celebration that unites industry professionals in recognizing and empowering hospitality students,” said Lorie Tuma, associate professor of hospitality and tourism management at GVSU. “By asking the best executives in the world what this day means to our industry, we can ensure it continues to grow and inspire future generations.”

A dozen executives and professionals within the hospitality and tourism industry — including the American Hotel & Lodging Association, 3D Cruise Partners, the U.S. Travel Association, the National Concierge Association, Maritz and others — are scheduled to speak throughout the event.

Tuma said the industry has experienced tremendous shifts since the pandemic three years ago and organizers hope the day provides inspiration and guidance for students looking to explore the many career sectors in hospitality and tourism.

“Raising awareness and visibility is crucial for empowering not just students, but the entire hospitality profession,” Tuma said. “This day is about showcasing the essential role of students in shaping the future of the hospitality and tourism management industry.

“And the day is also about unveiling to students those sectors that are under the umbrella of hospitality that they may not even know existed: food and beverage, lodging, transportation, adventure tourism and event planning. We invite everyone to join us for the no-cost event and support this meaningful cause.”
