Developing the next generation of teachers isn’t only vital for the state’s efforts at retaining college graduates, but a central tenet to the mission of GVSU’s College of Education and Community Innovation.
For Mikayla Durham, the teaching profession is deeply ingrained in her family, so there was little question as to her own future career path. “My whole life, I’ve been surrounded by teachers,” she said. Durham said watching her mother — a special education teacher for 30 years — help and guide students was a tremendous inspiration to her.
“I watched my mom change kids’ lives,” Durham said. “She would take her class into the community, and they would work on social and life skills, and that just was so cool to me growing up.”
But, like many future educators, Durham and other GVSU students face a significant challenge as they prepare in leading their own classrooms — a financial hurdle. Fortunately, an initiative through the state of Michigan is helping to alleviate the financial stress for student teachers.
