Pia Kurusu White was just a girl when her father, the late Saburo Kurusu, took part in two significant events in 1940 and 1941 that led to the beginning of the United States' involvement in World War II, but she vividly remembers her father's recounting of the hours before the attacks on Pearl Harbor and his role in signing the Tripartite Pact with Germany and Italy.

Hauenstein Center will host expert to discuss equality and the Declaration of Independence

The concept that "all men are created equal" is a concept that has been enshrined in the American political spirit since it was included in the Declaration of Independence in 1776.  But do Americans fully understand the language and context of the Declaration, especially when it comes to equality? Constitution expert Jeffrey Rosen to present at Hauenstein Center event

Controversial issues including attempts to change states' abortion laws, questions about citizenship on the 2020 Census, and voting and electoral rights have all been in the spotlight in 2019, and much of the guidance about how these issues may be resolved is included in a single document: the Constitution of the United States.  To celebrate Constitution Day, Grand Valley State University's Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies is hosting Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center.

International alliances to be focus of Hauenstein Center event

Around the world, international alliances and partnerships are increasingly under scrutiny, with the U.K. poised to leave the European Union and tensions between the United States and Iran are escalated from the U.S. pullout from the Iran nuclear deal.  With these current international pressures in mind, the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies at Grand Valley State University will host its first Common Ground Initiative event of the season, a presentation by historian and best-selling author Lynne Olson.

Grand Valley alumnus awarded highly selective Phi Kappa Phi fellowship

A Grand Valley alumnus has been awarded a highly competitive scholarship by Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society.  Scott St. Louis of Midland, Michigan, was selected as a recipient of a Marcus L. Urann Fellowship, named after the society's founder. St. Louis is one of only six recipients nationwide to receive the prestigious $20,000 fellowship.
