About GVSU Safewalk

Safewalk is a free service in which Department of Public Safety employees will accompany students, staff, and visitors who feel unsafe walking alone, across campus. The primary goal of Safewalk is to allow safe travel from one location to another with a greater sense of security.

This service is offered seven (7) days a week from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. during the fall and winter semesters. Safewalk may be available at other times of the day based on availability of staff. Please call (616) 331-3255 to inquire.

Absolutely! Download the free app, Rave Guardian. You can sign up with your GVSU email and stay safe on all of the University's campuses: Holland, Allendale, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Muskegon, and Traverse City. There is a built in safe-walk safety timer feature that can notify friends, family, and GVPD in case of an emergency with just a single click.

To request a Safewalk, call GVPD Dispatch at (616) 331-3255. Be sure to have information ready such as your name, telephone number, your present location, and your intended destination.

Safewalk is provided to students requesting someone to accompany them walking to or from their destination.

Safewalk requests cannot exceed two (2) students per requesting party.

Safewalk is staffed by student cadets employed by the department.

SAFETY TIPS

If you are in an emergency, CALL 911.

Plan ahead. Do not wait to consider your personal safety and nighttime plans.

Whenever possible, do not walk alone at night.

Use Safewalk or GVSU Guardian services.

Utilize the RAPID when possible. Click here for the bus schedules.

Be mindful of your surroundings.

Do not use headphones or be completely distracted by your phone, especially at night. It reduces your awareness.

Stay away from poorly lit areas and avoid taking shortcuts or paths. Choose well-lit, heavily traveled sidewalks.

Trust your instincts! If something doesn't feel right, don't take any chances.

Tell someone your plans and travel routes.
