Job Summary
The Enterprise Communications Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for supporting, implementing, and optimizing critical IT infrastructure and Voice Systems.
Essential Functions
- Supporting, implementing, and optimizing IT infrastructure and communication services.
- Works with management, end users, architects, engineers and various vendors regarding application, design and installation of infrastructure and communication services.
- Installs, configures, maintains, supports, and optimizes all university phone systems.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs university cable plant. These duties will require working in tunnels and on ladders.
- Determines appropriate architecture, topology and transmission requirements for voice, and data cabling systems based on established departmental and industry best-practices, guidelines, and standards.
- Researches, evaluates, and recommends new products practices, and/or procedures related to data and communications infrastructure.
- Evaluates, prioritizes, and implements system modifications and upgrades.
- Installs, configures, and maintains UPS equipment in data-comm equipment rooms.
- Works ticketing system incident, request, and change management processes.
- Assists with day-to-day network operations and incident response.
- Documents work performed.
- Maintains accurate records of appropriate hardware settings, stating equipment location and features, as built drawings of data and telecommunication systems, and system cable records.
- Responsible for maintaining skill level and knowledge of developments within the field by participation in training opportunities, studying manuals, and reading journals and technical publications.
- May supervise student employees and interns.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Non-Essential Functions
- Deploy UCaaS physical devices and software clients to end-users.
- Assist with the installation and maintenance of network switches, routers, Wi-Fi equipment.
- Provides technical assistance and training to users to determine system needs and cost.
- Assists with installation and removal of servers within datacenters.
Required Qualifications
- High school graduate.
- Minimum of four years’ experience in comprehensive design, installation, and support of communication infrastructure.
- Working Knowledge of IP addressing and routing.
- Working knowledge of personal computers.
- Demonstrated experience to successfully maintain positive interpersonal relationships.
- Demonstrated experience to successfully operate office equipment.
- Demonstrated experience to successfully provide quality customer service.
- Demonstrated experience to successfully maintain satisfactory work performance and attendance records.
- Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience to successfully work independently, organize own work and coordinate work activities of others.
- Demonstrated ability to physically perform the duties of the job such as lifting equipment, laying wires in tunnels, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Substantial experience in construction of wire plant for voice, data, and fiber.
- Experience with IP Telephony and UCaaS products.
- Experience configuring wireless devices.
- Experience with Zoom.
Supervision Received
Receives minimal supervision from a designated supervisor. Much of the work is self-initiated. Person is expected to function with considerable independence and apply appropriate policies and procedures within the assigned area of responsibility.
Supervision Exercised
Hire, train, schedule and coordinate the work of student employees and may act as lead worker to PSS staff members within the department/unit/division.
