Elements of Job Postings
The job description is an internal document maintained and used by compensation to correctly grade and make accurate compensation decisions. The job description should contain only the core responsibilities and experience required to perform the job. Additional role specific responsibilities should be added to the job advertisement when recruiting.
The job posting/advertisement focuses on attracting applicants to the job requisitions. The advertisement contains more specific details and about the position, the organization, and any supplementary marketing details.

Job Advertisement Elements
It is required to add salary expectations.
Salaried position guidelines:
- You must include the salary or salary range. You may add "commensurate with experience."
- Minimum starting salary line can remain as-is.
Hourly position guidelines:
- Minimum starting salary of $__ per hour, or
- Hourly Wage
The verbal offer to the final candidate cannot exceed the posted salary guidelines.
Inform the applicants about GVSU’s benefits. Language will vary based on the type of position. An example is provided below.

It is important to incorporate our core competencies into all stages of the employee lifecycle, starting with the job advertisement.
The application deadline informs applicants how long the posting will be available to submit their application.
Salaried position options:
- Provide a date when applications will begin to be reviewed and leave the posting open-ended (i.e., “Consideration of applications will begin immediately, and the posting may be closed at any time at the discretion of the University.”)
- Choose a closing date that is at least 7-10 days.
Hourly position options:
- Follow the appropriate union contract.
Inform the applicants what documents they need to upload when applying to the position.
- The application requests the cover letter and resume/cv, and additional application materials as listed in the job posting.
- The system limits the attached documents to 5 individual files or files up to 5MB total.

Where to Advertise Your Job
Where We Post Your Job
Human Resources will post your position to the GVSU Careers website and email the posting to veterans’ employment services liaisons from the State of Michigan and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. From there, the following online job boards funnel all GVSU postings to their platforms, free of charge. Please note we do not control how jobs are posted on these sites unless they are paid advertisements.

Faculty Positions
It is highly recommended that all faculty positions are posted in a national publication. To help with the higher cost associated with national publications, the Office of the Provost typically purchases a discount package in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Please contact your Dean's office for more information.
Hourly Positions
Hourly positions do not require additional advertising, but it is an option available to you. Human Resources will assist with the posting if requested. Please review the current publications that we partner with.
The cost associated with the advertisement is paid by the department who is hiring for the position.
AP Positions
In addition to the GVSU Careers site, Indeed and Glassdoor, we highly recommend that AP positions be posted to social media where you see fit.
LinkedIn is a great source of networking and identifying candidates for these roles. Each individual LinkedIn user is allowed 1 job posting at a time, free of charge.
Promoting Positions on Indeed
All GVSU job positions are scraped to Indeed, but that does not include advertising of the job. If you would like to promote a job position on Indeed, the Talent Acquisition team will advertise the job on your behalf.
Please follow the steps below to promote a position on Indeed:
- Identify the position you would like to promote on Indeed
- Contact the Talent Acquisition Specialist with the title and Job Requisition number of the position
- Meet with the Talent Acquisition Specialist to discuss budget and length of time for promotion of position on Indeed
- The Talent Acquisition Specialist posts the position on Indeed and promotes for the length of time discussed
- Once the promotion period is over, the Talent Acquisition Specialist will close the position posting
- Human Resources will bill your department at the beginning of the following month once an invoice and receipt has been received by GVSU
