Leading Lakers: Leadership Pilot Program
Interested in developing yourself as a leader?
In response to feedback from the AP Committee, GVSU affinity groups and the broader community, and in alignment with Reach Higher 2025, a group of faculty and staff from our campus community is in the process of developing a university-wide leadership development program. We will be launching the resulting pilot program in February 2023. Our goal is design a mid-tier leadership development program, while also gaining insight from individuals representing different areas across the university to strengthen the program in the future.
Applications are due by January 13, 2023.
Structure
The pilot program will consistent of 20-25 individuals. Participation will require attendance at 6 in-person sessions over the span of 12-weeks. Sessions will be held on the Allendale and Pew campus (alternating weeks), will run for 3.5 hours from 3-6:30 p.m., and include a meal. Virtual attendance will not be permitted for this initial pilot program offering.
Dates
To be eligible, you must be available in-person for each of the meeting dates below:
- February 15, 3-6:30 p.m., Allendale (Topic: Strategic Mindset)
- March 1, 3-6:30 p.m., Pew (Topic: Reach Higher 2025 & Managing Change)
- March 15, 3-6:30 p.m., Allendale (Topic: Equity-Minded Leadership)
- March 29, 3-6:30 p.m., Pew (Topic: Conflict Management & Communication)
- April 12, 3-6:30 p.m., Allendale (Topic: Building Trust & Teams)
- April 26, 3-6:30 p.m., Pew (Topic: Project Management)
Goals
- Provide a mid-tier leadership development opportunity for staff and administrative faculty.
- Gain insight from participants representing different areas across the university to strengthen the program.
- Participants will gain a deeper understanding of their preferred works styles and how they relate to others.
- Demonstrate strategic leadership by providing significant and detailed feedback to shape the program for future cohorts.
Participant Expectations
- Participants must be available to attend all sessions and complete the required readings and homework between sessions.
- Participants will be expected to share detailed feedback on their experience with the program to offer opportunities for improvement of future iterations through surveys or other evaluative tools.
- Participants will honor professional standards of confidentiality with respect to participation in nonpublic discussions during the program.
- Participants will be expected to express interest in applying for the program with their supervisor.
Department Expectations
- Your department is expected to provide release time for this opportunity and treat it as a professional development experience (vacation time will not be used).
- Departments may need to make arrangements for the excusal from meetings or events that would prevent the participant from meeting during the 6 required in-person sessions.
Apply
The application will serve as the basis upon which finalists will be selected to participate in the pilot program. Applicants must be regular, full-time employees (AP, PSS, Faculty, MGS, POAM, COAM, Security Staff) in good standing with the university to be eligible.
Please note: Individuals not selected for this initial cohort will have future opportunities to participate.
