Starting in 2024, Grand Valley State University will begin collecting optional sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) demographic information from students, faculty and staff through the Inclusive Data Collection Project. This project will enable GVSU to make informed decisions, provide culturally and socially relevant interventions, appropriately allocate resources, and further recruitment and retention efforts among historically under-represented communities. With the support of university leadership in the Division of Inclusion and Equity, the Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center staff recommends that GVSU adopt methods to collect SOGI data via self-service Banner throughout the student and employee lifecycle.
PURPOSE OF THE INCLUSIVE DATA COLLECTION PROJECT
The purpose of this project is to create modifications to the Banner Self-Service, database, and systems it feeds to accomplish the following 5 goals:
- Allow users to select their pronouns and have this information displayed where necessary.
- Allow users to select their gender designation and have this information displayed and fed to appropriate systems.
- Allow users to update their legal sex through Self-Service.
- Allow users to update their title (prefix) in Self-Service.
- Provide a place for sexual orientation data to be stored and reported from.
