Words Matter

This collective work began on campus in late fall 2021 to align with GVSU's values of a welcoming and inclusive campus. Best practices were studied from higher education institutions around the country and adapted for Grand Valley, with input from current students, faculty and staff members.

This guide is not a mandate when writing for Grand Valley websites and other materials. It only offers thoughtful, practical guidance when writing and speaking about diverse populations:

• Gender 
• LGBTQIA+
• People with disabilities
• Races and ethnicities 
• People from low-income backgrounds
