Beach Greens
Also called sea sandwort
- Iñupiaq name: Atchaaqłuk
- Family: Caryophyllaceae
- Scientific name: Honckenya peploides
- Distinguishing characteristics: Succulent, yellow-green leaves. Small, inconspicuous, green/white flowers with strong honey-like scent. Plant 2-3 inches in height.
- Similar species: This plant is the only member of its genus, so there aren't many lookalikes, and none present in Alaska. If you see a succulent plant growing near the beach, its likely beach greens!
- Habitat: Sandy beaches along the coast.
- Best time to harvest: Early spring - beach greens are some of the first sprouts when the seasons begin to change!
- Uses: Young leaves taste best and can be eaten raw or cooked. Great source of vitamin C!
