Community Resources
Utqiaġvik
Utqiaġvik, formerly known as Barrow, is the Northernmost city in the United States. It serves as the epicenter of commerce and community on the North Slope, and is one of four sites where ITEX-AON performs research.
Atqasuk
Also on the North Slope and just over 50 miles Southwest of Utqiaġvik is the small village of Atqasuk. Atqasuk was originally established as a hunting village, and still has several hundred residents today. Atqasuk is another of four sites where ITEX-AON conducts research.
Iñupiat Culture and Heritage
The majority of people living on the North Slope are Indigenous Alaskans of Iñupiat heritage. The Iñupiat people have historically been heavily reliant on subsistence to survive in the Arctic. The current Iñupiat communities include eight on the North Slope: Anaktuvuk Pass, Atqasuk, Utqiaġvik , Kaktovik, Nuiqsut, Point Hope, Point Lay, and Wainwright.
