Lanthorn Promotions Team Member

Job Description:
Advertising and public relations students can join the Lanthorn Promotions Team for a paid position or internship credit and stipend. Responsibilities include promoting the Lanthorn at campus events, tabling, distributing promotional items, and assisting the mascot. Qualifications include a relevant major and availability to work at some campus events. Members under this team work under our Promotions Manager who organizes our promotional events. They work to host promotional events around campus to enhance awareness and visibility of the Lanthorn.

Lanthorn Distribution Team Member - Allendale Campus

Job Description:
Become an important part of the Lanthorn by ensuring the bi-weekly distribution of our print newspaper across Grand Valley State University's Allendale campus. This position requires a reliable and punctual individual to collect newspaper bundles and deliver them to designated campus locations. Deliveries are scheduled for Monday mornings, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, necessitating a consistent commitment to this schedule. Responsibilities include efficient and accurate delivery to maintain the Lanthorn's connection with the campus community, keeping students and faculty informed.
Desired Skills:
- Available every-other Monday morning 8-10am

Editorial Department
Job Description:
Grand Valley State University’s student newspaper, The Lanthorn, is hiring paid staff writers for the 2025-26 school year for our Laker Life section. Staff writers are responsible for reporting, writing, and filing weekly stories in a timely and professional manner. Staff writers report to their section editor. Staff writers should have a background in nonfiction writing and working on tight deadlines, but previous journalistic experience is not required (reporter training will be provided by the editorial staff). Time commitment is approximately 5-10 hours per week, and applicants must be full-time GVSU students.
Desired experience:
- Other collegiate writing and reporting experience
- A Journalism, Broadcasting, and Digital Media or English major (helpful, not required)
- Prior knowledge of Associated Press writing style
Responsibilities:
- Conducting at least two interviews per week with sources to be quoted in the story.
- Investigating and researching story assignment and relevant contextual information
- Reporting current events around campus
- Producing weekly stories of 550 words or more in a timely manner
- Consistent communication with your section editor regarding story production, troubleshooting issues and source questions

The Grand Valley Lanthorn is seeking a layout designer for the 2025-26 school year. The layout designer works under the Layout Editor and with the editorial team to produce a bi-weekly print newspaper. Time commitments are approximately 7 hours every other Sunday while school is in session. Applicants must be full-time GVSU students.
Desired experience:
- Well-versed in Adobe InDesign with familiarly with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
- Experience with new or magazine layout
- Creating user-focused, creative designs
Responsibilities:
- Attending bi-weekly, in-person newspaper production meetings
- Using the Adobe suite, primarily Adobe InDesign, to produce clean, modern designs
- Producing relevant graphics and special issues when requested
Job Description:
Grand Valley State University’s student newspaper, the Grand Valley Lanthorn, is hiring a paid videographer for the 2025-26 school year. Time commitment is approximately 5 hours per week. Applicants must be full-time GVSU students.
Desired experience:
- Expertise in shooting and editing high-quality video content on tight deadlines is a must, and candidates who are self-motivated will succeed in this position
- Lanthorn has its own video equipment, but the videographer is welcome to bring their own
Desired Skills:
- Produce original video content for Lanthorn website and social media accounts:
- Partnering with the multimedia editor to create TikTok content
